Social Security Insights
Key concepts to understand about Social Security and claiming strategies.
Full Retirement Age (FRA)
Your FRA is determined by your birth year. For those born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. Claiming before FRA reduces your benefit, while claiming after FRA increases it through delayed retirement credits.
Delayed Retirement Credits
For each year you delay claiming Social Security beyond your FRA, your benefit increases by about 8% per year until age 70. This can result in a 24-32% higher monthly benefit compared to claiming at FRA.
The Break-Even Analysis
The break-even age is the point where the cumulative benefits of delaying claiming surpass the cumulative benefits of claiming early. For most people, the break-even age is between 78 and 80.
Spousal Benefits
A spouse can receive up to 50% of the worker's PIA at FRA. Spousal benefits are available even if the spouse has no earnings history, and can be claimed as early as age 62 with a permanent reduction.
