Singapore Coast FIRE Insights
Key considerations for Coast FIRE planning in Singapore.
CPF as Your Foundation
CPF is a mandatory savings scheme with attractive risk-free interest rates (OA 2.5%, SA 4%, RA 4%). CPF LIFE provides a guaranteed monthly payout for life, reducing your Coast FIRE target significantly. Build your CPF balances early to maximise retirement income.
SRS — Tax-Deferred Investing
The Supplementary Retirement Scheme allows you to invest with pre-tax dollars, reducing your taxable income. Withdrawals after the statutory retirement age are only 50% taxed, and you can spread withdrawals over 10 years. It's a powerful tool for high-income earners.
Investment Returns
Singapore's stock market (STI) and global equities offer growth potential. However, your CPF balances earn guaranteed rates — consider them as your bond allocation. For non-CPF investments, a blended return of 5-7% is reasonable. This calculator defaults to 5.5% to be conservative.
Inflation Protection
CPF LIFE payouts are index-linked to inflation, providing some protection. However, your non-CPF investments should also aim to outpace inflation. Singapore's inflation has historically averaged ~2%, which is our default. Adjust this if you expect higher inflation.
