Canadian Coast FIRE Insights

Key things to understand about Coast FIRE in the Canadian context.

🏦

Which Accounts Count

Include your RRSP, TFSA, and non-registered investments. The TFSA is completely tax-free — a powerful tool for bridging to retirement. Your home only counts if you plan to sell and downsize. CPP and OAS are treated as guaranteed income, not as part of your savings pot.

⏳

Access Ages Matter

You can access your RRSP at any age, but withdrawals are taxable. The TFSA has no minimum age. CPP can start as early as 60 (with a reduction) or as late as 70 (with an increase). OAS starts at 65, but you can delay for a higher amount. Plan your gap years carefully.

📈

Real Return Assumptions

Canadian equities and bonds have historically averaged 5-7% nominal returns. With inflation at ~2-3%, the real return is roughly 3-4%. Our default of 6% expected return with 2.5% inflation gives a real return of about 3.4%. Adjust these to match your own projections.

👑

CPP & OAS Enhancements

The Canada Pension Plan is being enhanced to provide higher benefits for those who contribute after 2019. OAS is indexed quarterly to CPI. For high-income retirees, OAS is clawed back above ~$90,997 (2026). Factor these into your plan.
