Australian Coast FIRE Insights
Key things to understand about Coast FIRE in the Australian context.
Superannuation Is Your Cornerstone
Superannuation is the bedrock of Australian retirement. With a 11.5% employer contribution (rising to 12% in 2026), your Super balance grows with compounding and favourable tax rates. It's the most powerful vehicle for your Coast FIRE journey.
Access Ages Matter
You can access your Super at 60 (if retired) or 65 (without restriction). The Age Pension starts at 67. Your non-super investments (shares, property, etc.) have no age restrictions — they are your bridge to retirement. Plan your gap years carefully.
Real Return Assumptions
Australian equities have historically returned 8-10% nominal, with inflation around 2-3% — giving a real return of 5-7%. Super funds typically target 6-8% long-term. Our defaults reflect these ranges. Adjust to match your own projections.
Age Pension Means-Testing
The Age Pension is means-tested. The full pension for a single is about $29,744/year, but it reduces as your income and assets increase. The calculator assumes you receive the full amount — if you have significant savings, your actual pension may be less. Use the "Other Income" toggle to model partial pensions if desired.
